Global talent scheme – get the expertise your company needs

A new opportunity to employ highly-skilled overseas workers has just been launched!

On 1 July 2018 a new visa program was introduced by the Australian government – Global Talent Scheme (GTS). This scheme has been introduced on a 12-month trial basis to assist companies in the STEM industries. During this 12-month trial period, a four-year Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa will be issued to approved applicants.

Why do we need a new visa scheme?

With a worldwide demand for top talent, Australia needs to be at the forefront of accessibility to the overseas pool of expert-in-their-field, specialist industry workers to support Australian businesses who want to create greater wealth for Australia.

The Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Alan Tudge, has this to say about the GTS: “This scheme is designed to facilitate businesses accessing top talent from around the world… [Global Talent Scheme provides] the flexibility to handle high value, niche skills that can’t be obtained under the standard visa programme”.

Who can apply for a GTS visa?

This new scheme has been specifically developed to provide access to workers in the innovation sector, enabling skills and experience from overseas bio-tech fields such as robotics and AI, molecular biology, medical engineering, or in fields such as financial analysis, data analytics and computer security.

Both established businesses and start-ups can apply and nominate a potential overseas employee and if approved, a four-year TSS visa will be issued with permanent residency (PR) application possible after three years of work.
